Texas Sheet Cake has to be the most delicious, heavenly dessert. I remember this decadent chocolate dessert from my childhood, so I wanted to find a similar recipe. Even though it is not gluten free, I tried this version of this chocolate dessert hoping it was the perfect melt-in-your-mouth recipe.
NOTE: THIS RECIPE CONTAINS GLUTEN. In a future article, I will attempt a different recipe that is more appropriate for this site.
The Chocolate Dessert Challenge
In my first attempt, I was able to find a dessert that was somewhat similar to the taste that I remembered from years ago. Unfortunately, I cannot find the recipe I used, so now I have a second layer to this mystery.
Last night, I was excited to try a new recipe that received rave review from some friends.
Cake Ingredients
- Butter, 1 cup, separated
- Cocoa powder, 5 Tbsp
- Water, 1 cup
- Sugar, 2 cups

- Eggs, 2
- Sour cream, 1/2 cup
- Vanilla, 1 Tsp
Cake Directions
- Grease and flour a cookie sheet.
- Turn your oven on to 350 degrees.
- Place butter in a glass bowl. Using the defrost setting in your microwave, melt it without burning it.
- Carefully remove the bowl from the microwave. Add cocoa powder and water, and combine with a whisk.
- Set aside.
- In a separate bowl, mix all dry ingredients.
- Add the eggs, sour cream, and vanilla. Use an electric mixer to combine well. Add the butter mixture and mix well.
- Pour mixture into your cookie sheet. Place in oven and bake for 20 minutes or until done.
Frosting Ingredients
- Butter, 1/2 cup
- Cocoa powder, 5 Tbsp
- Milk, 6 Tbsp
- Vanilla, 1 Tsp
- Powdered sugar, 3-1/2 cups
Frosting Directions
- Place butter in a glass bowl. Melt the butter in the microwave using the defrost setting.
- Use a whisk to add the cocoa powder.
- Add the milk and vanilla. Mix together.
- Add the powdered sugar.
- Frost the cake with the icing.
Results
While my family enjoyed the cake, unfortunately, I was disappointed with the results. It did make tempting treat; it was a short chocolate cake with very rich icing. However, I found it to be too cake-like, and less Texas sheet cake like. While it was good enough for a one time treat, I won’t make this recipe again. Next time, I will try a gluten free dessert instead.
